Instead of "(R)" it indeed must read "TM".
Alternatively, we may consider to remove the term "Java", that is, to just say: "The <draw:applet> element represents an applet that is embedded in a document." That should work, because the next sentence says that the element has the same semantics as its HTML counterpart, and the HTML specification a) defines what an applet is and b) used the term applet without "Java" as well.
