Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-3468) Changes needed forIFNA & IFERROR function definitions for empty cells

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-3468?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=22112#action_22112 ]

Eike Rathke commented on OFFICE-3468:

In OOo and Excel, IF(ISNA(A4); A5; A4) does not return an empty string, the same as I mentioned for IFERROR above applies:
=IF(ISNA(A4); A5; A4)   => displays 0
=IF(ISNA(A4); A5; A4)=0   => displays TRUE
=IF(ISNA(A4); A5; A4)=""   => displays TRUE

Note that   =0=""   displays FALSE.

For =LEN(IF(ISNA(A4); A5; A4)) the LEN() function converts the result of IF(...) to Text. An empty cell becomes Text of length 0. This is identical in OOo, Gnumeric and Excel.

> Project: OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument) TC
>          Issue Type: Bug
>          Components: Needs Discussion, OpenFormula
>    Affects Versions: ODF 1.2 CD 05
>            Reporter: Eric Patterson
>            Assignee: Eric Patterson
>             Fix For: ODF 1.2 CD 06
> For both IFNA & IFERROR, The function definitions currently state:
> Semantics: Computes X. If ISNA(X) is true, return Alternative, else return X. Thus this is semantically equivalent to IF(ISNA(X); Alternative; X), except that X is only computed once. If X or Alternative is a cell reference to an empty cell, it is treated as the empty string "".
> In both Open Office & Excel, the semantic equialent listed above, returns a zero, not an empty string. The function definition needs to be updated to allow for this.
