Patrick: At the first glance you suggestions sound better than mine, but I think what is missing is the fact that only the character content of the paragraph that contains the <text:a> element counts. What about:

The character content of the <text:a> element and any of its descendant elements, provided that it is part of the character content of the paragraph that contains the <text:a>element, forms the anchor of a hyperlink. 6.1.1

Dennis: Your question regarding the use of the term "anchor" is interesting, but it goes beyond the comment that was originally made. I personally think that the term "anchor" works very well, because it is absolutely neutral in regard to the UI. I cannot imagine a term that fits better, except that we may say "source anchor" rather than just anchor.
