I guess this issue could also be taken as a persuasive argument against having attribute and element names that appear to carry meaning. These names are not visible to the user but should be used only inside the file format. There is nothing to be gained by renaming them since and implementation will still need to support both the old and the new name and in fact only bloats the code slightly.
