Just a couple of questions to possibly clarify what is being asked:

1) ODF currently has no concept of "indented" rows, yes?

2) That is you can apply a sub-total operation but you have to select all the rows included in the sub-total? 

(I think that is what you are saying above.)

Next question:

3) Would it be a useful feature to have sub-sets of rows (indented perhaps by presentation style) that are subject to specified operations? The rows still have to be chosen to be included.

That might make it more complex to include the sub-total in a larger roll-up but possibly not. 

4) Is it possible now to capture sub-totals or do you just total the column without regard to existing sub-totals?

I am not sure that is an implementation issue. We have to capture the sub-totals for transmission to the next application in line.

I don't think it would be "faster" sub-totaling but a different style of presentation of the sub-totals. Perhaps that's the ticket. Can we introduce the presentation of "indented row" that have sub-totals by whatever means the application chooses? 

That is I can indent a row (style) and select those rows (by some unspecified means) and impose a sub-total operation on one column. Guess that raises an issue of how the columns align doesn't it?
