Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Issue Comment Edited: (OFFICE-1221) Public Comment: <text:s> element (etc) needs to be removed (ODF 1.2)

@Patrick

By soft line break I mean a line break in a sequence of spaces. In some applications, the spaces don't continue on the next line. If it was a sequence of it would usually cause the soft line-break to occur at the first soft space or hyphenation preceding the run of etc.

There are rules in ODF for the collapse of space characters across element boundaries. The only way to prevent that is sometimes to make an explicit space by some means. Currently, it is with <text:s>.

Concerning the use case.

Supppose I am typing something about software and I want to exhibit the literal string, " " (there are 5 spaces in there). Somehow, the software needs to create something in ODF that preserves those five blanks. What do you believe are the options for that now?

As you can see, above, the HTML practice of collapsing consecutive white space is alive and well and the generated HTML does not show the explicit spaces taht I entered. If you look at the text that I entered, which I can see now that I am editing this comment, my spacing is still there. Naughty JIRA. Naughty.

(Note, if there is more than one space in this comment, that means the comment form recognizes multiple spaces and uses the HTML provisions for preserving them.

Oh, another use case. I am one of those who thinks have extra space after a full stop is an useful thing. I type them automatically. There are some on this comment entry. Let's see if they are preserved, aye?
