The formula in 6.5 Matrix Functions, 6.5.1 General is confusing:

The bottom right value is a_\{MN} - which is inconsistent with all the other values in the matrix, which are a_\{N1} ... in the same column, and a_\{1M} ... in the same row.

The text says:

"The elements of a matrix are denoted by the corresponding lower case letter and subscripts, which defines the row and column number."
