I assigned this to myself so it would not be an orphan. I have no particular view for resolution but to a non-graphics person, it does sound like a reasonable request. Comments?

The proposal has a number of short falls. Should we discuss now, with a view towards fixing or wait for an implementation to suggest a resolution?
