It seems that application of resolution follows resolution.

That's cool.  It provides for resolution as agreemen on appropriate action, and application as having concluded that action.

Once we are accustomed to that distinction, this can be very useful.

I am not going to apply the resolution of this subtask because I want to leave an example in place.  

Notice that the master-task is in applied state while this sub-task is in resolved state and the other is in open state.  

So JIRA is smart about this and it also maintains the connection among the issues so that interdependencies can always be traced.  (I don't know what happens if something is closed, but we will get to determine that eventually.)
