Subject: OASIS hosts Open Mobility Foundation

Open Project Advisory Council members,
FYI, OASIS is proud to host the newÂOpen Mobility Foundation,Âa global coalition led by cities committed to using well-designed, open source technology to evolve how municipalities manage transportation. The OMF launched last week with the mission to promote safety, equity, and quality of life. The announcement comes as a response to the growing number of vehicles and emerging mobility options on city streets.

The OMF brings together academic, commercial, advocacy and municipal stakeholders to help cities develop and deploy new digital mobility tools and provide the governance needed to efficiently manage them. The group is off to a great start withÂmajor support from the Rockefeller Foundation. Founding municipal membersÂincludeÂAustin, Texas; BogotÃ, Colombia; Chicago; Los Angeles; Louisville; Miami; Minneapolis; New York City; Philadelphia; Portland; San Francisco; San Jose; Santa Monica; Seattle; and Washington D.C. Initial non-public members include Bird, Blue Systems, Microsoft,ÂSPIN, and STAE.Â

OMF will advance the Mobility Data Specification, currently in use for regulating scooters in more than 70 cities around the world. See more details in this Forbes article,ÂWhy Cities Are Writing Their Own Standards for Scooters and AVs.

Hosting for OMF is provided under the OASIS Open Development Foundation which supports groups that wish to run as separate, freestanding entities, operated with OASIS assistance.Â
Note thatÂOMF founders chose not to form asÂan Open Project, because they felt it was important to limit their group's governance to municipalities and allow technology companies to participate only as part ofÂits Technical Steering Committee. Our Open Projects requirement that governance be open to any Project Sponsor was not a fit for OMF's needs. The group will also be engaged in defining public policy, which is outside the scope of Open Projects.
