Hi,

KOffice includes a command line utility to convert files, you can use it like 
this:

koconverter file.doc file.odt

The other way round does not work, but you can use the RTF format:

koconverter file.odt file.rtf


Please note that the KOffice .doc filter is somewhat limited. In particular 
pictures are not converted. But as long as you have simple text-only word 
documents you will be fine with it.
