Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] (OSLCCORE-56) Need to decide if inverse labels are part of Property shapes

    [ https://issues.oasis-open.org/browse/OSLCCORE-56?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=61497#comment-61497 ]

Nick Crossley commented on OSLCCORE-56:
---------------------------------------

Martin is right - these two things are orthogonal.

The core 3.0 oslc:inverseLabel is a property of a vocabulary term. It comes from the Vocabulary Annotation Vocabulary at http://open-services.net/wiki/core/Vocabulary-Annotation-Vocabulary/. This suggest a label to be displayed in a UI for an incoming link - one from some other resource which references the resource being displayed, or in other scenarios where a property is being viewed in reverse.

The inverse property definition is part of a resource shape, not a vocabulary. It is a way to define an incoming link in the shape definition for the target resource - as opposed to the normal case where links are described as outgoing links as properties of the source resource. Inverse property definitions are also mentioned in issue 48. The description of ext:isInverseProperty in the W3 Shapes submission is incomplete, in that it does not define which of the other properties (labels, cardinality, predicate, etc.) of the property definition are to be read in the forward direction, and which in the inverse direction. I do not believe we yet have a complete and consistent proposed definition of the inverse property definition for shapes, and as noted in issue 48, it does not solve all extension use cases anyway.

> OSLC Core 3.0 core-vocab.html has a brief non-normative section on inverse labels that suggest inverse properties (backlinks) should not be used (as described in link guidance), and inverse labels should be used instead. Arthur's Resource Shapes 2.0 W3C submission discussed inverses, but took a different approach. Should we decide on an approach and add the oslc:inversePropertyName to oslc:Property in Resource Shapes?
