Subject: Re: [pbd-se] Inviting nominations for Chair of the Privacy by Design Documentation for Software Engineers TC

Thank you, Drummond.

I would like to accept the nominations on behalf of Dr. Cavoukian and myself.

As enthusiastic champions of the OASIS PbD-SE's future work, we co-wrote the PbD-SE charter and have been talking about it at various conferences and meetings around the world.

We are looking forward to meeting and working with the PbD-SE membership on December 5th, and are asking for your kind votes of support for us as future PbD-SE TC co-Chairs. Please see our bios below as per Chet's requested statements of qualifications.

Kind regards,
Dawn.

Dr. Ann Cavoukian is recognized as one of the leading privacy experts in the world. Noted for her seminal work on Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) in 1995, her concept of Privacy by Design seeks to proactively embed privacy into the design specifications of information technology and accountable business practices, thereby achieving the strongest protection possible.  An avowed believer in the role that technology can play in the protection of privacy, Dr. Cavoukian’s leadership has seen her office develop a number of tools and procedures to ensure that privacy is strongly protected, not only in Canada, but around the world.

Dr. Cavoukian serves as the Chair of the Identity, Privacy and Security Institute at the University of Toronto, Canada. She is also a member of several Boards including, the European Biometrics Forum, Future of Privacy Forum, RIM Council, and has been conferred a Distinguished Fellow of the Ponemon Institute. Dr. Cavoukianwas honoured with the prestigious Kristian Beckman Award in 2011 for her pioneering work on Privacy by Design and privacy protection in modern international environments. In the same year, Dr. Cavoukian was also named by Intelligent Utility Magazine as one of the Top 11 Movers and Shakers for the Global Smart Grid industry, received the SC Canada Privacy Professional of the Year Award and was honoured by the University of Alberta Information Access and Protection of Privacy Program for her positive contribution to the field of privacy. Most recently in November 2011, Dr. Cavoukian was ranked by Women of Influence Inc. as one of the top 25 Women of Influence recognizing her contribution to the Canadian and global economy.  This award follows her recognition in 2007 by the Women’s Executive Network as one of the Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada.

Dr. Dawn Jutla is a full professor at the Sobey School of Business and an adjunct professor of the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University.  She holds a PhD in Computer Science. She is a multi-disciplinary researcher and an author of over 85 international publications in the computing, information systems, electronic commerce, electronic privacy and security, and e-government areas. She is also the co-author of a book entitled: e-Business Readiness: A Customer Focused Framework, published in the professional Addison Wesley Information Technology Series.

Dawn currently serves on the OASIS Board of Directors and as an elected governor on the Saint Mary’s University Board of Governors.  She has served in the past as Chair of the Department of Finance, Information Systems, and Management Science at the Sobey School of Business, and as a member of the Scholarships Selection Committee (Natural Sciences and Engineering) for the Canadian Bureau of International Education. Dawn reviews frequently for IEEE and ACM technical conferences and journals, participates actively in the OASIS Privacy Management Reference Model and Methodology (PMRM) TC, and is the convener of a proposed OASIS Privacy by Design Documentation for Software Engineers (PbD-SE) TC.  Dawn is the 2009 recipient of the World Technology Award for IT Software in the Individual Category for her previous decade of R&D work in online privacy.

Chet,

I would like to nominate Ann Cavoukian and Dawn Jutla as co-chairs. I believe they are both extremely well qualified and no one knows the subject better than they do.

Best,

To all prospective members of the PbD-SE TC:

The first order of business at the first TC meeting is to elect a chair (or two co-chairs). If you are interested in serving as a Chair or in nominating another individual for the position of Chair, you are welcome to make that candidacy known prior to the first meeting by posting a note to the TC's e-mail list expressing your interest and/or intent along with a brief statement of your or their qualifications. The meeting will also accept nominations from any qualified persons before beginning the vote.

Please be aware that prospective members must join the TC no less than 7 days prior to the first meeting in order to participate in the meeting and vote on for TC Chair(s). To join the TC, go to the TC's web page at http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/pbd-se and click the "Join This TC" button.
