Subject: EC key wording

All,

I've just uploaded revision 2 of the new ECDH KEY WRAP proposal, which uses CKK_EC and CKK_MONTGOMERY instead of ECDSA and Montgomery keys in the text.

Please note that in the changes for item #13 that we accepted yesterday the term "ECDSA key" is also used in sections 6.3.16 and 6.3.17. Therefore, we need to change this in the same way, but I consider this an editorial change only.

Overall, "Weierstrass form" appears in the introduction of section 6.3 "Elliptic Curves". However, it's not 100% correct since all elliptic curves can be expressed with a Weierstrass equation. The "traditional" curves use the SHORT Weierstrass form. I suggest we add "short" here.

In fact, ECDSA is already used in the current standard:

- Section 6.3.3 is called "ECDSA public key objects" and in the text you find "EC (ECDSA) public key object". The section also starts with "EC (also related to ECDSA) public key objects", which is similar.

- In section 6.3.4 you find "EC (ECDSA) private key object". The section also starts with "EC (also related to ECDSA) private key objects".

- Section 6.3.9 also uses the wording "EC (also related to ECDSA) key pair generation mechanism" twice.

- Sections 6.3.12 and 6.3.13 use "ECDSA private key" and "ECDSA public key"

- Sections 6.7, 6.10.6, 6.47.6, 6.49.6 contains "EC (also related to ECDSA)".

Section 6.3.4 is named "Elliptic curve private key objects", which is not accurate since it applies to short Weierstrass curves only.

Most of these usages already appeared in standard version 2.40, i.e. before the introduction of Edwards and Montgomery.

We should have a consistent wording here. Shall we use "short Weierstrass" everywhere? Ok, this will lead to quite long section names such as "Short Weierstrass elliptic curve public key object", but clarity before brevity :-)

Regards,

Daniel
