Subject: DNT and how it impacts PMRM

Dear colleagues,
I can't agree more with Peter's statement that both Apple's move on Iphone tracking; and MS's DNT feature are in response to a very real consumer demand for privacy as a right. People (consumers, citizens, governments everywhere) are starting to catch on. Of course the Valley has selective hearing about this, since that's start-ups make a lot of their money. However, in the spirit of Michael's scenarios, I would argue that the key to all this is opt-in. Remember the all-powerful Focus Group? That was an instance where people got paid to have their brains picked, and privacy violated. Privacy is a right; information is a commodity with a price. If you opt in, then you should get some sort of compensation for it. Many people (and I among them) have been contending that a portion of dot.com/social media value will shift to consumers, particularly those consumers that decide to be socially hyper-active or hyper-informative. They will become or already are digital "mavens". Along the same lines, opt-in will not be the default behavior, it will be a conscious choice. My sense is that our role as a standards organization is to facilitate that shift, and empower the USERS to monetize, consent, authorize - and to help the vendors see the light and build good will. I would also note, rather self-servingly, that many of the groups that make their money today off of violating people's privacy don't care one fig about OASIS, or standards generally. Why? Because standards are transparent and consensual. So who cares hows they feel ;-)
