Subject: [REVISIT] Re: [regrep-cc-review] Re: [regrep] 7/7/2003: Core Components and Data Types
I think I was a bit too hasty in my response below (must have been rushing out for Happy Hour in Georgetown) ;) I believe that being "of" a data type and being "defined/restricted by" a data type are separate things, but I also believe that they both accurately describe the role of a data type. The first one is the probably the most familiar to people - we say that field X is of a string data type, field Y is of an integer data type, etc. But if we think of the lexical space of a data type (the range of valid values for that data type), then a data type really does restrict a value. For example (these are things we all know - just stating them for illustration purposes), the W3C Schema "int" data type has a minimum value of -2,147,483,648 and a maximum value of +2,147,483,647. Additionally, a schema author can use facets such as "minLength" and "maxLength" to further restrict the lexical space of a data type - in this case, a string data type.
