Subject: Auto Industry: TREAD ACT Compliance Scenario
Situation: The automotive OEMs (Original Equipment Manufactures) have to spend billions of dollars each year handling warranty related issues. The US Congress enacted the TREAD (Transportation Recall Enhancement and Accountability Documentation) Act which requires substantial additional data gathering and reporting responsibilities. The warranty data collected by complying with the TREAD Act is expected to give the automotive OEMs life saving early warning information before massive recalls are required. However, the vocabulary used in the warranty data is not standardized which makes explicit trend analysis difficult. There are numerous failure codes and they are often incorrectly applied which further impacts the trending information. Failure to comply with the initial reporting requirement carried a fifteen million dollar ($15,000,000) price tag. The cost of future non-compliance is beyond the scope of this scenario. Problem: How can a Semantic Aware ebXML Registry/Repository be used to reduce the TREAD Act compliance burden and improve the integrity of trend data? Semantic Components: * The Registry/Repository provides XML schema interoperability support. * The Registry/Repository provides ontology support for discovering XML schema incompatibilities. * The Registry/Repository provides support for mapping from a non-standard XML schema to a standard XML schema. * The Registry/Repository provides ontology support for capturing failure code heuristics. * The Registry/Repository provides support for capturing and discovering failure related images.
