Subject: Semantic ebXML Registry Proposal: The Two Bindings Solution
Semantic Content Management Team: Here are some brief ideas I have for adding semantic capability called, "The Two Bindings Solution." Problems: How to support Semantic capabilities and limit the number of changes to the ebXML Registry Standard? How to reduce the impact of supporting semantic capabilities by current ebXML Registry vendors? Solutions: Create a Knowledge Interchange Format Binding. o Normative solution Create an Open Knowledge Base Connectivity Binding. o Non-Normative solution Make registry applications responsible for inference and query formatting. Technical Benefits: The Two Bindings Solution will remove the semantic computation overhead from the ebXML Registry. The Two Bindings Solution increases the modularity of the ebXML Registry Specification. The Two Bindings Solution reduces the potential for standards bloat. Market Considerations: Knowledge Interchange Format (KIF) has a long history in the knowledge community. KIF is in the process of becoming an International Standards Organization (ISO) standard. ISO standards should be built on other ISO standards. The work of the Semantic Content Management Sub-committee will become a part of the overall ebXML Registry Standard, which by the time of the completion of the Semantic Content Management Sub-committee work, will be an ISO standard. OWL is becoming a major force in the knowledge community. Tools like Protιgι use OKBC to transfer knowledge representations (i.e., OWL Models, RDF Models). Making the binding provide the translation between the knowledge interchange protocols and the internal storage structures of the ebXML Registry will enhance reusability of current registry code while maintaining the current level of complexity in the ebXML Registry Standard. The Knowledge Interchange Format Binding will be used to support the UBL ontology work and the PSL work. The Open Knowledge Base Connectivity Binding will be support the OWL and RDF based ontologies.
