Subject: Fw: Global identifiers
Team, This came up on the XML/edi list. I believe this is a separate use case - the noun one we have right now just deals with element semantics. Codelists is one of those perennial bugaboos - but notice that 50% of content in a traditional business transaction is actually carried in code values - and as can be seen from the currency code example - there are descreet needs in the use case around versioning and subsetting. I believe we have the tools to put this together - but as ever its a question of defining the actual mechanics of doing this in a consistent way using those tools. And as the message below shows - we have some nice interest in this already - and potential pilot projects we can work on. Notice the USGov XMLWG already has one proposal for handling codelists using schema. That was heavily dependent on XSD techniques though - so I'm thinking something combining OWL and simple XML is potentially more elegant and flexible... Thoughts? Thanks, DW p.s. Ed - how about submitting a use case for us - and someone from GoC joining the SC work - don't worry about the work involved - Ottawa are not going to win the Stanley Cup this year anyway, eh?!? ----- Original Message ----- From: "David RR Webber - XML ebusiness" <Gnosis_@compuserve.com> To: "David Webber" <david@drrw.info> Sent: Friday, April 02, 2004 5:43 PM Subject: RE: Global identifiers -------------Forwarded Message----------------- From: "XMLEDI Group", INTERNET:xmledi-group@listman.disa.org To: "XMLEDI Group", INTERNET:xmledi-group@listman.disa.org CC: , INTERNET:mpereira@istar.ca , INTERNET:Bruce.catley@pwgsc.gc.ca , INTERNET:Alistair.Rondeau@SGC.sgc.x400.gc.ca , INTERNET:dnickull@adobe.com , INTERNET:gatesray@rogers.com , INTERNET:Bob.Sunday@pwgsc-tpsgc.x400.gc.ca , INTERNET:Cote.Joseph@tbs-sct.gc.ca , INTERNET:Hunter.Linda@tbs-sct.gc.ca Date: 4/2/2004 2:54 PM RE: RE: Global identifiers Ed', Good posting. It definately seems that we are closing in on the vision started in 1998 for XML/edi - of having Registry manage these across a domain. It might be worth adding an additional use case to the OASIS Registry SCM work - to support codelist objects in XML in the registry. I know there's been various prior looks at that - but would be good to have a consistent layout for these in XML in the Registry. Thanks, DW. ========================================== Message text written by "XMLEDI Group" > Hi Ken, Thanks for your note. I apologize for entering the discussion at this late stage but feel an urgent requirement to be more informed about the work that is being undertaken on "code lists" within UBL. This is a very important aspect of information interchange and I wanted to ensure that you were aware, and better still, had taken into consideration the work within ISO SC 32 that Jake Knoppers is doing as the Canadian expert. If I am not mistaken it is part of ISO 15944 but Jake can provide the definitive reference on this item. I am also sharing this e-mail with colleagues in the Integrated Justice Initiative as they have been developing code list for use within their community. Their work is ISO 11179 based as well and has been used to populate an ebXML registry/repository with core data elements in English and French as part of a GoC prototype implementation. On the 30th of this month we demonstrated prototype inter-operability with the registry by a business process modeling application and an e-forms designer application. Developing and maintaining "code lists" using a mechanism such as an ebXML registry/repository has significant implications for information interchanges and electronic commerce. Thus we might wish to undertake more intensive collaboration within the standards context between ISO 32, UBL and projects such as the CPSIN IJI initiative. The Canadian Advisory Comm on ISO/SC32 is meeting on April 7th and I am copying this message to the chair, Bob Sunday for his information.
