Subject: Re: Something of interest and possible conflict

All:

We became aware of this immediately upon the launch. The ebXML
community was concerned about possible overlap with the ebXML
direction. While it is still a concern, the work done by UDDI does
fill in a void we had in ebXML, primarily in the area of the
pre-contract phase of discovery. UDDI provides an excellent mechanism
for allowing a searchable interface for four basic types of query:

- find_service
- find_company
- find_tModel
- find_binding

UDDI can be very useful to locate an ebXML compliant company and then
locate an ebXML compliant binding (similar to a service interface). THe
find_tModel query can also be useful for locating a specific business
process interface, perhaps an ebXML Business Process.

IMHO - there are some concerns about long term scalability although it
is likely they will be solved. UDDI has a probelm of managing an
efficient means of Registry to Registry communication for updates on a
24 hour basis. DNS accomplishes this (sort of) but the data in a UDDI
Registry is far more comprehensive than a simply IP address. THe MS
engineers have taken an approach of replication. THis is probably a
wiser approach than an update log and trying to perform multiple
"inserts" into an live system. My feeling is they will accomplish it to
the satisfaction of business needs.

The OASIS Reg/Rep project should not be jeopardized in the least bit.
Many people will simply not want MS having access to log files showing
who is requesting their business information. There is also a group who
will favour an alternative approach and the open source type
architecture.

Both have their place. Let's keep the OASIS and ebXML work on track.
Both will benefit from each other's existence.
