Subject: RE: [chairs] Re: [regrep] [Fwd: ObjectRef and RegistryObject needcommon base type]

Thanks, Karl, Ranjeeth,

A web form will certainly be helpful. Whether it can accommodate the
range of feedback we need remains to be seen.

As a small point of clarification, my opinion is that OASIS is on the
verge of becoming more influential and more respected. Hopefully this
will lead to further refinements of the process that can address a
number of issues that will be engendered by this success. The
willingness of OASIS to work diligently to improve and extend this
process is commendable and appreciated.

Having said that, I think we need to consider broader support for
public discussion, perhaps separate from the TC process per se, if it
can be accommodated. It may be that such a development may help in
alleviating to some extent a particular difficulty I see developing
at present.

Specifically, I think we may need to consider how best to consolidate
some efforts, particularly in the legal, business application
processes and web services arenas, where we are seeing a
proliferation of efforts aimed at smaller and smaller niches that
might better be absorbed as subcommittees within existing TCs, or as
sub units of Joint TCs, or a new category of Committees similar to
the Member Sections but dedicated to the larger categories of
business and governmental processes where we find this proliferation.
I suspect that as it currently stands, we face a great deal of
unnecessary, and perhaps conflicting, duplications of efforts.

A new forum for discussing these issues, specifically in a public
context where opinions need not be filtered by specific kinds of
memberships, would probably be helpful for gathering insights that
may be useful to us.

These are just suggestions based on observations. I also think we may
need to seek an acceptable way to get the benefit of very narrow
specialists whose participation in a TC per se simply to qualify for
participation in a subcommittee is not likely to be supported by
otherwise interested member companies. I am actually faced with this
consideration in the area of VoiceXML and WML within the WSRP Markup
Subcommittee I chair.

My closing thought on these topics is that we need to make sure we
don't sacrifice flexibility while ensuring accountability.

Ciao,
Rex
