Joe, I agree with Matt - this is a classic 'Your actual mileage may vary scenario'. What I can say - if you intend to upload a whole bunch (eg 1,000s) of things to the registry - plan to use a bulk loader process - and make use of the registry <package> features to group things and apply common operations. How well a registry supports and exposes automated uploads is then the important criteria. Fortunately once loaded - registry data tends to be stable - so this is typically a 'one-off' event - rather than a daily, or hourly operation.
