I have a similar comment to Carl's - I don't have a clear picture of the 
potential benefit from the end-user perspective, so it's hard to weigh 
the pros/cons of the proposed change.

Do you have an example of a concrete use case (or cases) that it 
addresses, and some estimate of how often the use case crops up?
