SAML2 aritfacts refer to protocol messages and are carried in SAML2 artifact
resolution protocol requests to support the Artifact binding.

SAML1 artifacts refer to assertions and are carried in SAML1 request
protocol messages to support the Browser/Artifact profile.

Conceptually similar but technically distinct and with no overlap. Also, the
purpose of the second artifact type in SAML 1.1 is obviated by metadata, and
type 04 basically replaces 01 and 03.
