Target:
SCA
Assembly Specification
Description:
SCA currently describes service interactions
between clients and providers.
However, there is another form of application
interaction which is commonly used and
which is complementary to the current
service interaction modelled by SCA. This is
Event Processing, where messages called
Events are emitted by Event Producers
and which are processed asynchronously
by zero to many Event Consumers.
In addition to the simple production
and consumption of events, applications organized
in this way also involve the use of
Publish and Subscribe techniques, decoupling a set
of event producers from a set of event
consumers.
Event processing becomes very useful
when combined with service oriented architecture.
Service processing is required when
dealing with requests that require specific handling
and where the client requires a definite
response either in terms of processing completed
and/or in terms of data returned. Event
processing is useful when looser coupling is
required - events are produced without
the expectation that any specific processing will
occur based on them. However,
by listening to one or more events an event consumer
can detect certain behaviours and react
accordingly.
SCA should be extended to encompass
both services and event processing.
