i'm still confused about the C&I api. why would the c&i expose the underlying format? why would it not just be an object with the appropriate equals/hash methods

the bindings should not be constrained wrt what gets used on the wire. a ws-addressing binding will use a URI to correlate, some other binding may use something else
further consideration and debate committed to the mailing list
