Existing Issues with Proposals

ASSEMBLY-157: Make support for constrainingType an optional compliance point
http://www.osoa.org/jira/browse/ASSEMBLY-157
Changes in section 6 Constraining Type
Make constrainingType optional - if supported MUST support all in this section
SimonN:
OPTIONAL is RFC2119 keyword - not capitalized and not used as in RFC2119
MartinC:
Don't like optional - either require it or remove it
<Mike Edwards>
Discussion on email list:
<Mike Edwards>
DaveB:
if not supported then could either be tolerated or rejected

...treat like extension - ignore if not supported
MartinC:
Seems a design issue - nothing to do with runtime so not part of SCA
DaveB:
constrainingType like a template for component but not complete system - more would be needed

...not sure we would want to standardize a templating mechanism

...also don't want to box in by mandating constrainingType only to have to change it later
AshokM:
Don't think templating is specified well enough at present to replace constrainingType
DaveB:
Agreed - at present just make cT optional and add templating in subsequent version of spec
AnishK:
cT was created to support contracts at runtime which ensure parts of component conforms to contract implied by cT

...a bit like subclassing a base type

...Hence runtime shouldn't be able to ignore cT as it represents a contract
MartinC:
cT can make things very difficult - not usre which use cases (practical) are enabled
DaveB:
Agree that cT and templates are not the same thing

...but templating would obviate the need for cT
MikeE:
Not getting customers banging on the door demanding cT
AnishK:
Meant runtime in loose sense - would probably done at deployment but spec dosen't define this

...cT is implementation independant - allows different teams of programmers to work with contracts

...cT was used to provide runtime check - so shouldn't be ignored
MartinC:
Can't assume all stuff in runtime is debugged and valid - cT provides a check
MikeE:
Have used composites over top of components and use these to constrain
AnishK:
Thats a good argument for removal as opposed to optional

...will need to think about this
Further discussion offline/E-mail
Agreement to skip ASSEMBLY 139: What is a constrainingType file supposed to look like?
