<Mike Edwards>
Sorry folks, I am on a call that is overrunning
<Dieter Koenig>
WS-BPEL 2.0: "[SA00026] Variable initialization logic contained in scopes that contain or whose children contain a start activity MUST only use idempotent functions in the from-spec. The use of idempotent functions allows for all the values for such variables to be pre-computed and re-used on each process instance."

Long discussion of what is idempotent
<Ashok>
Wikipedia tells us
<Ashok>
Idempotence (pronounced /admpotns/) describes the property of operations in mathematics and computer science that means that multiple applications of the operation do not change the result. The concept of idempotence arises in a number of places in abstract algebra (in particular, in the theory of projectors and closure operators) and functional programming (in which it is connected to the property of referential transparency).
<anish>
Here is what HTTP says about idempotency:
<anish>
Methods can also have the property of "idempotence" in that (aside from error or expiration issues) the side-effects of N > 0 identical requests is the same as for a single request. The methods GET, HEAD, PUT and DELETE share this property. Also, the methods OPTIONS and TRACE SHOULD NOT have side effects, and so are inherently idempotent.
<Mike Edwards>
In computer science, the term idempotent is used to describe methods or subroutine calls that can safely be called multiple times, as invoking the procedure a single time or multiple times has the same result; i.e., after any number of method calls all variables have the same value as they did after the first call.
<Mike Edwards>
"Looking up some customer's name and address in a database are typically idempotent, since this will not cause the database to change."
<Mike Edwards>
but this does not imply that the value in the database will never change

Mike: idempotency should be with respect to the SCA Domain Configuration
Action: Anish - write proposal for Issue 61 to tie idempotency to the SCA Domain Configuration
