Dave, you removed the @ sign from the attribute tests, for example  
//component[name="test3"]
But XPath 1.0 http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath#path-abbrev says

|"@name| selects the |name| attribute of the context node"

So, we do need the @ sign as in //component[@name="test3"]||||
