Subject: Re: [sca-policy] Is there a need for direct attachment?
Eric, A nice piece of detective work. The charts attached to the proposal email certainly outline the reasons why we might want to eliminate the use of direct attachment in favor of supporting only external attachment. I'll note that this will cause a fairly major rev to an essentially complete Assembly spec, so we should do this with our eyes open. The charts also mention the possibility of moving binding attachment to a similar external mechanism. While I have always been a proponent of this, I'd prefer to wait until the next spec versions (1.2 is fine) to tackle the binding aspect of the proposal. This topic has been mentioned off & on several times and Sanjay and Anish actually put together a proposal. However it does not seem to have been discussed beyond its introduction on 2008-8-25. Minutes for 2008-08-25 http://www.oasis-open.org/apps/org/workgroup/sca-policy/download.php/29260/SCA%20Policy%20minutes%202008-08-25.pdf Proposal: http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/sca-policy/200808/msg00012.html I think what happened is that we got tied up with the "Push" vs. "Pull" debate and the proposal to remove "direct" attachment did not get incorporated into that proposal. POLICY-15 was open for very nearly 1 year and discussed/mentioned during virtually every teleconference - there were a LOT of issues that needed sorting out. I think the "direct" attachment discussion just fell through the cracks. It would probably be better to open a new issue for this and review Sanjay and Anish's proposal again. Best Regards, Eric.
