Subject: Re: [sdd-comment] VersionRangeType
Hi Jason, I am just suggesting that you also remove the existing FixName that is NOT associated with MinVersion or MaxVersion. Perhaps a clarifying example ... Application FOO supports a range such that Windows 2000 SP2 is the minimum version and Windows Vista SP1 is the maximum version. Windows 2000 without a FixName element implies Windows 2000 SP0 which does not meet the minimum version required by FOO. Are you suggesting that one could overload MinVersion and MaxVersion elements and include the value of FixName in VersionType as the value of VersionType is xsd:string? This is possible, however, doing so causes difficulty when the *same* fix MAY apply to both the MinVersion and MaxVersion. In that case overloading MinVersion and MaxVersion to include fix information implies that fix information is associated with the MinVersion and MaxVersion elements respectively, when in fact the SDD author's intent is for it to apply to the range. Thus my proposal to add it to both the range and the MinVersion/MaxVersion elements. To me, leaving it adds confusion and unnecessary complexity. If you go with this proposal, can you not declare everything that you could with the existing FixName? I can not think of a use case that requires this element. FixName in this case is associated with the range and not the MinVersion or MaxVersion elements. I suggest adding FixName to MinVersion and MaxVersion in addition to leaving FixName associated with the overall range. By adding FixName to MinVersion and MaxVersion, one can specify a minimum and maximum version that includes fix information specific to MinVersion and MaxVersion, for example, any Windows operating system between Windows 2000 SP1 and Windows Vista SP1.
