Subject: RE: [sdd] FW: OASIS Software Deployment Descriptor (SDD) - Conf. call on Oct. 12 to discuss dell requirement
Debra/Tom and SDD TC members,
Thanks again for giving
me the opportunity to present Dell Update Package Requirements at today's SDD TC conf. call. I would also like to
address the question of hardware update applicability in this email if I didn’t
explain it very clear to some of the members in the conf. call. One of the big concerns Dell has is to
see if SDD schema is able to cover the hardware update for BIOS, firmware,
driver, etc. In order to support
the use case of what update package is applicable to which hardware device, we
need the data model to be able to handle two most basic concepts of device
and software in the following two different contexts - inventory and packaging.
The relationships between device and software for that device need to cover following
areas: 1. Correlation
between hardware device and its associated software components in the
inventory context (Hardware with Software).
This relationship addresses what software is loaded for what hardware and what hardware is the
software applicable to. 2. Comparison
between hardware devices in inventory context (Hardware with Hardware).
This relationship addresses if the two
hardware instances are same type or different type. 3. Comparison
between software components inventory context (Software with Software).
This relationship address if the two
software instances have the same applicability. 4. Comparison
between software component in inventory context and software component in packaging context (Software with
Software Package). This relationship address which package could be applied to
what hardware in the system and what is the revision differences. This
relationship is established to compare the same software entity from different
context. 5. Comparison
between software components in packaging context. (Software Package with
Software Package). This relationship address whether the two packages are
different revisions of the same software or completely different software. This
relationship is established to compare the same entity in packaging
context. For the three dimensions I mentioned to identify if the package is applicable to certain device which including the system platform info (systemID or platform model), the device ID (could be PCI ID for PCI device or any unique ID to identify certain device) and the supported OS. For example, for an embedded NIC driver package, by knowing the PCI ID of the NIC that driver supports will not be enough info to make the decision on if this driver package is for that NIC. It also requires the identifier to know if this embedded NIC is on what system (since it could be for that system model only) and what OS is this driver for. So the data model needs to cover above situation for hardware update. Thanks,

[mailto:Angela_Qian@Dell.com] Debra, Here is the doc that list Dell pacakge use
cases and requirements for updating hardware firmware, drivers, etc. I
understand that there is the difference between software deployment and hardware
update. This doc lists the requirements that Dell needs for hardware
update. This may not the current standard that SDD wants to cover.
But we can discuss the details in tomorrow's meeting. Could you distribute attached doc to the
members that will attend tomorrow's call? Also in order to attend conf. call
tomorrow, should we join the conf. call with following info: Toll free Number: 1-866-628-7239

From: Hi
Lucinda, We’re getting close to
wrapping up the presentation of requirements. Are you almost ready to
present? The 5th or the 12th of October would be
good timing for us. Regards, Debra From: Lucinda_Ashmore@Dell.com
[mailto:Lucinda_Ashmore@Dell.com] Debra, We are
working on documenting our requirements. We have the requirements but they
are not all documented in one place. Can we please present in about 2
weeks? Thanks, Lucinda
