Subject: [sdd][glossary] Deploy
Hi all, I still don’t think that we have a
good definition of deploy. Act is a word that as a noun implies human
activity – clearly not a constraint for deploy / deployment. Also,
I think that the word available is ambiguous, and I’d like to see that
spelled out a bit more clearly.. The two relevant definitions that I’ve
located are actually not congruent: Computer Desktop Encyclopedia includes
testing and running, Wikipedia specifically ends before testing. Which do
we mean by “available”? If we consider the scope of the
deployment descriptor, then validation and the running state is actually included,
correct? deployment (from Computer Desktop Encyclopedia) Installing, setting up, testing and running. This
military term, which means the placement of troops and equipment in the field,
is widely used with computers as an alternate to the word
"implementation." For example, "XYZ software deployment" is
the same as saying "XYZ software implementation." To
"deploy" something is to "get it installed and running." Deployment (from Wikipedia) In a computer, a deployment
is the step of placing or installing software on the target systems which includes configuration steps if necessary. In software engineering,
this involves the phase just before testing. So, I recommend that we change this to: The process of making a solution instance available. This
includes installation, configuration, evaluation/testing and launching. Debra J.
