I made a pass at the java documentation:

I also tried to merge Brians and Ulfs comments
to the core spec, and to implement some of the resolutions that we talked
about in the calls.  Among others, moving sections 6.3 and 6.4 to
chapter 5.  These edits should probably be discussed in the call,
