Minutes:
Present:

Larry
Ray
Ralph
Jan
Ashley
Ralph
Matthew
Farrukh

Six of these are voting members, there are currently seven voting members. So we have a quorum.

Additional agenda items:
- Binary representation within records
- parameterized query support
(Note: we didn't get to either of these, so we will discuss them via email.)

Strawman Document.
We will rename this "Discussion Document" (strike the word "Strawman"). Add a note explaining more explicitly its purpose, and that "we expect it to change". Ray will revise the document during the next week (some of the revisions are discussed below), for a very brief committee review. Hopefully OASIS will issue it within two weeks.

OpenSearch.
The spec itself will subsume the OpenSearch functionality. We will remove the current annex and add a new annex that describes our plans: (1) Point to the existing OpenSearch spec as a legacy spec, and show how the protocol interoperates with that spec. (2) Explain how the protocol will integrate OpenSearch functionality (though not necessarily, and likely not, in a manner that is interoperable with the legacy OpenSearch spec). Farrukh will contribute some prose for this.

XML/WSDL.
Though we agree that it is premature to write XML for the protocol, there will be a stub section added in the document, and it will include a pointer to the current SRU xml.

Data Model.
We don't have a data model developed yet so won't include one in the "discussion document".

Shiboleth/SAML.
Kerry has contributed prose about Shiboleth/SAML to add to the non-normative annex on authentication. Add: "servers that need authentication SHOULD support HTTP basic and digest authentication".

Overview.
Jan will contribute prose for an Overview section.

Coordination with SRU Implementors.
When we consider anything for this standard that might be important to SRU implementors, we need to alert the SRU list and get them involved in the discussion of that issue. For each issue, one of the Chairs (Matthew or Ray) will post an initial message to the SRU list. After that, there can be free-for-all discussion over the SRU list. (Everyone on the committee should subscribe to that list.) But Matthew or Ray should initiate that discussion. This is not intended to censor or inhibit discussion, but only to help organize it and keep it focused and coherent. Separate threads will be initiated for each issue with meaningful subject lines. We will try to keep discussion within a thread focused on the single issue. A draft message may be posted to the committee for review before it is posted to the SRU list. (The first such discussion initiated will descrbe this process to the SRU implementors.)

Announcements, publicity.
OASIS will issue a press release about this committee, and we will try to coordinate it with the release of the "Discussion Document".

REST.
One significant issue is the operation parameter. The suggestion is to eliminate that parameter, incorporating it instead in the base url, in some fashion. This will be a discussion point for the SRU implementors.

ATOM (or RSS) as a response schema.
There is a proposal to replace the SRU repsonse schema with ATOM. The current draft adds a parameter allowing the client to request an alternative schema (which could be ATOM). There seems to be general agreement that there should be one schema singled out in the standard that is mandatory. Currently that would be the SRU response schema, and the proposal is to make ATOM the single required schema instead. Technical arguments for this proposal are sound, but there is concern that ATOM is just a passing fad. This is an issue to bring to the SRU implementors.

Scan.
There is a suggestion to eliminate the Scan operation, and instead represent this functionality via search/retrieve. This same debate occurred many years ago when Z39.50 implementors concluded that Scan could not easily be represented via search. It may be worthwhile to revisit that issue, so this issue too will be brought to the SRU implementors.

XCQL
We didn't discuss this at the call. It was sufficiently discussed prior to the call via email that it probably should be brought to the SRU implementors for discussion. The suggestion is to eliminate XCQL, which is an XML representation of the CQL query - it is not used in a request, only in the echoed response. Some impementors find it useful to have the query echoed in a parsed form. It would be useful to know how many (if anyone) has implemented it.

WIKI
We will request a WIKI for TC use.
