Subject: Re: [search-ws] eliminate version parameter
I'm certainly in favor of initiating a thread on the SRU list: DRAFT ----------------------------------------- There is a suggestion to eliminate the version parameter (for the same reason that it is proposed to eliminate the operation parameter). The version parameter in SRU is based on the assumption that the same base URL would be used for multiple versions of the protocol, and SRU prescribes a mechanism to allow different versions to attempt to interoperate. Instead, different base URLs could be used for different versions, base URLs and corresponding versions exposed via explain, and then a client would know the version of a server, so there would never be a mismatch. ----- Original Message ----- From: "LeVan,Ralph" <levan@oclc.org> To: "Ray Denenberg, Library of Congress" <rden@loc.gov>; <search-ws@lists.oasis-open.org> Sent: Thursday, November 15, 2007 10:46 AM Subject: RE: [search-ws] eliminate version parameter The need for a version number is based on the idea that you'd use the same URL for multiple versions of the protocol. Change the URL for incompatible versions and the version number is no longer necessary. I'm not concerned about dropping it. I responded that doing so would take away the ability for different versions to interoperate. But thinking more about it more, I'm not sure. This would take some thinking through - using different base URLs to for different versions, and exposing the names and versions via explain, a client would know the server version so there would never be a mismatch. I think eliminating the version parameter makes sense.
