Conformance Subgroup call 15-Jun-01
Attendees:
Bob Griffin
Tony Palmer
Lynne Rosenthal
Krishna Sankar

Actions:

Krishna: revise spec and send to subgroup; comments back to Krishna by end-of-day
Bob: send revised conformance program to subgroup by end-of-day Monday, to TC by end-of-day Wed.
Bob: send note on test discussion for F2F to TC chairs
Next call:
F2F on 25-June
Consensus/decisions:
§ Use "partition" rather than "profile" for grouping of conformance. Each partition is focused on one of the authorities defined for SAML, and the assertions and messages associated with that authority.
§ In each partition, define the core that is required and then the additional elements that a vendor can support for that partition. The vendor would have to state what of the additional elements has been validated/certified.
§ Mechanisms by which certification is performed will be the responsibility of the certification authority; could include automated tools on server, etc.
§ Conformance of extensions to the suggested guidelines is not a TC responsibility; validation of an implementation should confirm that extensions have not broken the SAML functionality claimed by the vendor.
§ Conformance clause should call out any extension mechanisms specified in the SAML spec.
Additional notes;
Bob: does grouping by authority map to how the vendors will use SAML?
Krishna: at F2F, need to clearly ask whether the partitions map to what is being done by members of SAML.
Tony: should vendors be required to demonstrate validity of extensions across versions?
Krishna: This should be the vendor's responsibility, not something that TC can require.
Bob: can be accomplished by version information in assertion?
Mark and Lynne: request conformance discussion on Monday afternoon or Tuesday at F2F, regarding test suites, tools; separate from discussion of Conformance Clause
