Background information: The Energy Security Unit (ESU) of the Institute for Energy supports the policy-making processes regarding security of energy supply.The Smart Electricity Systems and Interoperability (SESI) Action of the Energy Security Unit performs independent scientific research on the on-going transformations of smart electricity systems. The Smart Electricity Systems and Interoperability (SESI) Action is assessing building blocks and progress to speed up the development and modernisation of the European electricity grids, particularly in the context of the Energy Infrastructure Package and the smart grid Projects of Common Interest. SESI provides scientific and techno-economic support to policy Directorates-General (notably DG ENER and DG HOME), with particular reference to smart electricity grids.

Position 1: Integrated power and ICT systems testing expert
Position for: CATEGORY 30

The SESI Action is looking for an experienced candidate responsible for implementing the experimental activities and performing the testing related to integrated and interoperable power and ICT systems in Ispra.
 
The selected candidate is expected to:
- Plan and perform scientific research, with focus on the analysis of the performance and security ofcommunications systems of smart grids;
- Collaborate in the design and development of the Smart Grid/Electric Vehicle interoperability laboratory, taking responsibility of the communications part.
- Test and validate the conformance to international standards of industrial solutions and research results relevant for communications in smart grids, and specifically regarding the communications with end customers, among companies, with regulators, and for industrial control
 
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. or a minimum of 5 years of research experience after the first degree giving access to doctoral studies. Power system/ICT background, knowledge of power and ICT systems interconnection/operations, and experience in power and ICT systems testing are required. Knowledge of power system integration and interoperability is an asset. A good knowledge of spoken and written English is required.
 
 
 
 
Position 2: Power system and electric vehicle testing expert

Further to the investment in innovative facilities to assess the interoperability of smart grids and electric vehicles, the SESI Action is looking for an experienced profile to implement the experimental activities and perform the testing in the Smart Grid/Electric Vehicle Interoperability laboratory in Ispra.
 
The selected candidate is expected to:
- Collaborate in the design and development of the Smart Grid/Electric Vehicle Interoperability laboratory, taking responsibility of the power system part;
- Test and validate the conformance to international standards of industrial solutions and research results relevant for smart grids, electric vehicles and end customers;
- Get involved in international scientific networks and ensure the maintenance, mainly regarding standardisation efforts, in order to contribute with a sound scientific basis to the decision-making process. 
 
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. or a minimum of 5 years of research experience after the first degree giving access to doctoral studies. Power system engineering background, knowledge of power systems and e-vehicles interconnection/operations, and experience in power systems and e-vehicle testing are required. Knowledge of power system integration and interoperability is an asset. A good knowledge of spoken and written English is required.
