Subject: Accompaniment to the Attached Doc [Fwd: RE: SOA Ontologies basedon Ref Arch.doc]

Hi Everyone,
The attached document is taken from our work and is being offered for
its definitions by the author for the Open Group SOA Ontology effort to
consider. I thought we should be aware of it, and in case it isn't
clear, I would like to put the "Invited Review" on our agenda for tomorrow.

Cheers,
Rex

Allen,
The diagrams are as-is in SOA-RA document published by OASIS. I am pointing this out to SOA-Ontology group so that the working group can use the exsiting definitions and relationships used in SOA documents; instead of genrating new definitions and relationships for SOA ontology which are not consistent with existing definitions. Ontology should represent the existing definitions and relationships and redefine them.

Alaka, I sent this to Rex Brooks for information. He wanted to know where you got it. Would you please let him know? I can not imagine that it it proprietary to Boeing, but should have asked.
	Allen

Thanks Allen,

Is this something you've written, or are writing? I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I'm familiar with the "Navigating..." White paper, and we approved it on the OASIS SOA Reference Model Technical Committee (SOA-RM TC).

I'm more than familiar with the SOA-RAF, and while I agree that the diagrams shown in this paper can be interpreted as ontologies of a sort, I want to understand where this is coming from and get permission to distibute it before I pass it along to our group. However, jwhile the Open Group has used UML to provide a way of thinking about ontologies, it doesn't follow that the UML diagrams in the SOA-RAF are intended to be used in a similar way, at least as ontologies. Of course, this paper, the TOG SOA Ontology and the RAF used UML diagrams as aids to understanding.

I'm saying this because Dave Ellis of Sandia Labs and Ken Laskey of MITRE in DC and I are teaming up on a White Paper and Dave and I have actually collected the entire SOA-RAF into a single set of models using Enterprise Architect. All of these, including the work we three are contributing to the DoDAF Metamodel 2.02 effort that is ongoing and works in progress. So, if someone is using our work as ontologies, I am sure they would like to know about it, as would the SOA-RM- TC Reference Architecture Subcommittee (SOA-RM-RA SC).

Our Subcommittee is still working through the comments from the last Public Review, and I forwarded Chris Harding's call for comments to our SC earlier today.

So, I look forward to discussing this with you Thursday, and I will hold off on sending it along to the OASIS SOA-RM-RA SC until after know where it comes from and only if I have permission.

Cheers,
Rex
