Subject: RE: Issue 523(2) Suggestion

Here is my proposed resolution - it is based on Jeff's ideas, but adds some to it to make it more complete:

Line 10: Bold "specific architectures"

Line 36: Change "an architecture" to "a concrete architecture"

Line 53: Change "Architecture is not done" to "Reference and concrete architectures are not created"

Line 56: Change "Architecture is" to "Reference and concrete architectures are"

Line 96: Bold "software architecture"

Line 252: Bold "process architecture"

Line 455: Change "architecture" to "software architecture"

Line 458: Change "architecture" to "software architecture"

Line 695/696: Change "architecture is" to "reference, concrete, and/or software achitectures are"

Glossary:

Line 729: Change "Architecture" to "Concrete Architecture" and move to appropriate place in glossary

Line 733-734: Move "Software Architecture"  and accompanying text to it's own glossary item.

add "Process Architecture" to glossary (and define it)

add "Specific Architecture    a reference architecture and/or a concrete architecture" to glossary

I think that does it for the term architecture

That's a good idea.  Let me think on it - I will plan on getting something out COB today (which may mean Sunday night ; ).

Hi Chris,

I know you're putting together a recommendation per Duane's request with respect to the formal definition of the word "Architecture," and I thought I'd throw in my two cents because I'm pretty sensitive to (and very familiar with) the ANSI/IEEE 1471-2000 Std.

Below are a couple of recommendations that could result in minimal impact to the current SOA-RM spec language.  Further, we would not have to add the 1471 to the list of Normative or Non-Normative References (Sect 5).  We do (and are) planning to leverage the 1471 in our SOA-RA work.

1. I believe the confusion is really with respect to the existing definition of Architecture in the Glossary.  I would agree that the definition stated in the Glossary (with the exception of the definition for "software architecture" that is shown under the Architecture definition) does indeed reflect more of an Architectural Description from an IEEE 1471 sense.

2. My personal recommendation would be to drop the definition of "Architecture" altogether from the Glossary and retain only the definition of "Software Architecture" and perhaps add a definition for "Concrete Architecture" since the latter term is used quite a bit in the spec.  I would not recommend any other changes to the spec language.

Again, my two cents.

Regards...
