Subject: [stdsreg] proposed charter
Standards Registry participants: At our first meeting we should agree on a charter. Here's a proposal. It is meant to be lightweight, but is there anything that has been left out? Standards Registry Committee (StdsReg) Charter ============================================== Goal: -------- The goal of the Standards Registry Committee is to promote the exchange of information between standards development organizations (SDOs), and make information about SDO activities available to the public in order to increase collaboration between SDOs and the development of more interoperable specifications, and increase the participation in standards efforts and adoption of completed specifications by users. Deliverables: -------------- The Standards Registry Committee will create the following: 1. A simple specification for metadata that describes both in-progress and completed technical work created by SDOs. The metadata should be flexible enough to describe the work of most SDOs, and simple enough that it can be implemented at very little cost. 2. Selection of a taxonomy that can be used to classify each SDO's specifications. 3. A recommendation for how standards registries, both current and future, can be tied together to allow common searching across the registries hosted by various organizations. The committee's goal is to create the above deliverables in three to six months. Existing work should be used where possible and appropriate, and completed work should be in conformance with existing international standards as appropriate. The deliverables of the committee will be considered public property and may be freely used by anyone. Process ------- The StdsReg committee should be run in a very lightweight manner, with openness and cooperation as the guiding philosophy. The committee chair will conduct the committee according to the general principles of Robert's Rules, but the actual rules of Robert's will be used only when necessary. The committee chair will be elected by majority vote of the committee members. The chair can be removed by 2/3 vote of the committee. Membership in the StdsReg Committee is open to any person who can and will contribute to the deliverables of the committee. Active participation is expected. With the exception of the committee's first meeting a person cannot vote at the first committee meeting he attends or in his first email ballot. All activities of the committee will be publicly viewable. All meeting minutes and draft documents should be posted to a publicly accessible web page, and all mail list discussions will be publicly archived. Voting may take place in meetings and via email. </karl> ================================================================= Karl F.
