Subject: [stdsreg] Stdsreg Committee meeting #5 minutes [N013]
Standards Registry Committee document #13 Minutes of Standards Registry Commttee Conference Call #5 23 April 2002 The following Persons attended: Bob Hager, Karl Best, Luc Van der Berghe (for John Ketchell), Mark Norton, Martin Bryan, Robin Cover, Sally Fuger, Beatrice Gbatte 1 Introduction Roll call and welcome from Karl Best. 2 Approval of records of fourth meeting The minutes was accepted with the following corrections: in the clarification regarding Action 3.2, reference should be made to IT rather than to ICT. It was Sally Fuger who had said a few words about ebXML registry and not Karen Boehme. Action 4.3 was therefore on Sally, not on Karen. 3 Review of the status of action items In relation to action 4.1 Bob Hager summarised information sent to the list relating to the ISONET classification of documents. He expressed the view that the ISONET classification was a good input but felt it was too ISO specific and too wide in scope. Concerning action 4.2 Bob raised the issues of suitability of ICS. Is it sufficiently covering the IT-domain? Is it appropriate or not? Do we really want to provide a recommended scheme to people? Some participants were of the opinion that there should be no specific classification scheme created. Instead we should provide space for people to select their preferred classification. Others had some reservations about this suggestion. They felt that users looking for a specific topic may have difficulties to find it if no classification scheme isdefined. Without a harmonised classification, how should people to search for information? No unanimous support was reached in the meeting for the two possible options: either to allow a number of schemes or to identify a specific scheme for usage. A compromise suggestion was made by Mark Norton. His proposal was for a transformation of the queries between the local representation classification scheme and the outgoing representation classification scheme (based on the Z39.50 experience). Action 1 Mark Norton to write a proposal on classification scheme by 7 May, in time for the next meeting. With regard to action 4.3, Sally Fuger summarized the information sent to the list about a first ebXML registry implementation by Hong Kong University. Action 2 Sally to send metadata information generated by the ebXML Directory activity to the list. Some further contributions to test the strawman proposal had been received . The strawman seemed reasonably OK, with the exception of some identified aspects such as multiple references, multiple layers of titles, etc. Action 3 Bob Hager to produce a list of issues relating to the strawman proposal. 4 What can we report at June Interop Summit? The meeting agreed that a report had to be presented at the Interop Summit. But delivery of the full outcome of our activities will not be possible by then. The report should describe the goal of the Committee, give an overview of the Committee deliverables, what the Committee had discussed so far etc... 5 IPR issues: need a better IPR statement? Karl Best explained that this issue had been raised by the OASIS Board of Directors. There is a need to clarify Intellectual Property aspects. The meeting agreed to discuss this issue at the next meeting. 6 US government GA report: need for standards registries This point was postponed to the next meeting. It was advised to read about this matter at the relevant on URL. 7 Review additional recruitment efforts Bob reported that he had contact with two persons from IBM. Contacts were also in place with DCMI and OCLC, as well as with NIST (see above US government GA report). The next meeting will also discuss the requirements paper suggested by Robin. This document also will be particularly relevant to attract new people. 8 Any other business Next meeting will be held on 7 May and will be hosted by Monica Vago (INCITS) ============================================== Beatrice Gbatte -Assistant ISSS-Information Society Standardization System CEN - European Committee for Standardization Rue de Stassart 36, B-1050 Brussels Tel.: +32 2 550 08 89 Fax: +32 2 550 09 66 E-mail: beatrice.gbatte@cenorm.be Web: www.cenorm.be ==============================================
