Subject: [stdsreg] Standards Registry Metadata Definition, v1.0
The link below points to v1.0 of the Standards Registry Metadata Definitions I've prepared, utilizing (based on) 10 attributes from ISO/IEC 11179-3-1994, "Specification and Standardization of Data Elements - Basic Attributes of Data Elements". Definitions of the 11179-3 attributes are found at the end of the document. http://www.ansi.org/dds/ROOM_70/Public/standards%20reg%20metadata%20def%20v1 .pdf This is just a starting framework and much of the table has not been completed yet. I'm eager to get comments and input from other participants and wanted to make sure that we all agreed to the initial approach in terms of representing the metadata definitions. So this is intended as the next-step in terms of "strawman/strawwoman". The idea is to start to add some depth to the Standards Registry elements and should provide the behavioral detail that can be incorporated into an XML DTD or Schema down the road. A few items of note: + As first priority, I tried to capture all outstanding issues/comments on each element under the "Comments" attribute. + The definitions of ISO/IEC 11179-3 metadata attributes was drawn from "Dublin Core Metadata Element Set - Reference Description -Version 1.1 (<http://dublincore.org/documents/dces/>). I've also supplemented the Dublin Core definitions of attributes with text from ISO 11179-3:1994. Are there other attributes in ISO/IEC 11179-3 that we should be including? + We could also look at other metadata attribute schemes, such as the one used by ISONET Manual, 2nd Edition (1998), clause 3.1. These metadata attributes are also in compliance with/based on ISO 11179-3:1994. + I've added to the attributes a potential mapping to Dublin Core and we may want to map to other metadata standards. + Do we want to include an equivalent of the Dublin Core "Rights" Element, described as follows: "Information about rights held in and over the resource. Typically, a Rights element will contain a rights management statement for the resource, or reference a service providing such information. Rights information often encompasses Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Copyright, and various Property Rights. If the Rights element is absent, no assumptions can be made about the status of these and other rights with respect to the resource." ADDITIONAL PREVIOUS METADATA COMMENTS/RECOMMENDATIONS not yet captured in Standards Registry Metadata Definitions, v1.0: + Use Dublin Core ontologies for document properties + Look at DAML.org for registry of ontologies + Continue to review other metadata schemes: Diffuse.org, W3C Spec Prod, etc. + What syntax will be used for metadata: XML, UML, some database schema, or other?
