Hey, I thought you'd all want to see this follow up from Pim.

(Probably off-topic,  but I couldn't resist commenting)

The blog post makes some valid points.  Every programmer uses code snippets from Stackexchange and similar sites all the time.

But there are cases of open source projects copying/taking over entire modules without permission or proper attribution.  It would actually not be bad if Github checked against this. The blog post does not provide evidence that  "automated filtering of code would make software less reliable and more expensive".   Many code snippers on Stackexchange (worryingly, including ones on security) are actually wrong, so any encouragement of users to actually spend some time to review what they are copy-pasting could actually be useful.

Tracking reuse of software is actually a lot easier than other data types, as code is just text.  It can use the same decades old techniques that are used in anti-plagiarism software that teachers use nowadays to check their students are not just copying their papers from web sites. Github, with all its engineering talent, should have no problem developing/ integrating this technology in its platform.

Interesting catch from Dave Lemire of the OpenC2 TC.

This is a blog post from github alerting their community to the EU proposal to modify their copyright directive that could require code sharing sites to monitor uploads for potential copyright violations.

I'll see what the TAB thinks about it. But I also thought it was worth sharing with you all.

I've little doubt I'm one of dozens of voices, but the TAB seemed like the right place in OASIS to ensure this information was noticed.
