trimming schema

Any suggestions on what we can safely *remove* from the
schema to simplify it a bit? Is there anything which might
be duplicated unnecessarily? Anthing which doesn't make
sense? Anything which doesn't look as useful now as when
it was first put there? Anything which looks unduly complex?
I'd like to concentrate on what doesn't break a basic degree
of backwards compatibility and doesn't break implementations
so we can avoid a major version/namespace change.
