Hi All,

I tried to get hold of some slides on the transformational work that Sunderland is doing but have not yet had any joy. However, here are the notes that I made at the session:-

“Sunderland has focused on Digital Inclusion for a number of years. They have 600-700 public access PCs. Superfast broadband and cloud computing services will be up and running during 2012.

They will be vocal about the use of broadband by citizens and business. They are working with BT OpenReach on this.

They are trying to harness the ‘Future Internet’. This requires security & trusted services (incl. PSN), the 4th utility (superfast broadband), city-wide enablers (internet of services), connectivity to people and organisations (soft infrastructures).

They are working with IBM on the Sunderland Cloud and desire to work with the G-Cloud.

They respect and value innovation and enterprise.

They want to work with other organisations (gave an example of cooperating with the university and the football club).

They will have public sector, community and private sector ecosystems.

They are working with suppliers to build IL2 and IL3 access (ID management).

They are developing a service catalogue. Some of the services may come from their cloud and others from G-Cloud.

They are onloading a major charity and are talking to some businesses as part of their journey to become a digital city.

Shared services are starting to mature (e.g. with Durham).

In common with other LAs in the North East, they don’t feel that they can cut ICT costs any more so they are building a platform to drive real growth for their region.

There are more business start-ups in the North East than anywhere else in the UK. The stats indicate that 64% of them will still be trading in 2 years time.

They will probably promote themselves as an IaaS provider to G-Cloud in the next G-Cloud round (in March). (It was noted that there are currently no government suppliers in the CloudStore).”

Additionally, there is a report on their activity at http://www.businesscloud9.com/content/sunderland-it-goes-incubating/9344 which gives a reasonable overview of their aims and progress to date.

Regards

Nig
