Subject: FW: Cooperation between TGF and SLG

Following today’s conversation and conclusions on this, below is a copy of the exchange of mail (slightly redacted to remove extraneous elements) with Mike Dunham, leading the SLG work…

Peter,

Sorry to hear the outlook seems rather bleak, but I guess that I am not surprised.

I know we had talked about a call this afternoon, but I don't think we had nailed a time down.  <snip/>

ends no later than 6:30 EST.  We could talk after that.  Would that work?  Or would tomorrow work?

Mike

Subject: Cooperation between TGF and SLG

Hi Mike,

A quick heads up in advance of our call this afternoon. I’m also copying in John Borras, Chair of the OASIS TGF technical committee.

This morning, we had our regular monthly meeting of the TGF technical committee and we discussed both the specific draft paper on “Customer Driven Services” and the broader questions about collaboration between TGF and SLG.

We discussed three specific issues and came to the following conclusions:

-          To the question about a possible future joint organization or structure (501(c)3, etc) – the committee feels that there are considerable difficulties in giving distinct legal identity to a single OASIS committee and in any case we don’t have the authority to enter into such an agreement alone. I had discussed this also with the OASIS BizDev team and management who were also very cautious and advised that, for the organization as a whole, there was no obvious ‘value proposition’ in going with this idea. As such, the conclusion was that there is no desire to pursue this.

-          To the question about developing a joint deliverable – the currently named “Practical Guide to Customer Driven Services” – the committee feels that there is a danger for us both, TGF and SLG, in “diluting” our respective brands and brand recognition by introducing a new concept, CDS, before there is sufficient traction to the core ideas in both SLG and TGF. The committee also felt that the emphasis (or rather starting viewpoint) of SLG is perfectly valid but very different from TGF, which might add to confusion. It feels that both products have strong appeal and “stand alone value” and may well benefit from mutual cross-reference and play complementary roles in similar areas of work but that they are more valuable as distinct products. Furthermore, as TGF is composed of several work products, currently the Primer and the Core Patterns but to be joined in the future in additional work products, there might be confusion about what the “TGF part” of a common undertaking might be. As such, the conclusion was to not pursue the idea of a joint work product.

-          Finally, however, the committee recognises the value of SLG for its particular constituency and is happy to provide TGF material to be referenced within any SLG work product, within the general copyright and IP terms attached to those OASIS deliverables. Within the limited resources available, some members of the TC are willing to contribute advice and comments on any work in personal capacities but the ‘official’ input from our side is limited to appropriate re-use of the existing OASIS TGF deliverables.

I’m sorry that it couldn’t be otherwise. We had a very detailed and frank discussion, with input by TC members from four continents, so a very wide consultation bringing in experience from across the globe and there was a high degree of consensus around these three main issues.

As far as I am concerned, we are still on for our call later this afternoon and I’m at your disposal to discuss any practical upshots and follow-up.

With very best regards,

Peter
