RE: OASIS TGF CORE VOCABULARY

Thanks to those who joined the working call yesterday. We managed to clear a number of questions that I had raised and the attached spreadsheet now contains in the TGF tab our proposals for revising the current set of terms in the Primer. There are still a few questions to be resolved and these are highlighted in yellow. Hopefully we can resolve these on the TC call tomorrow.

When we have an agreed revised set of terms Peter and I will prepare a draft Reference Model for review. It may be during that exercise we will identify the need for further or removal of unnecessary terms but let’s get this initial list agreed first.

Following our discussions on the TC call last week, I have done some further work on a possible Core Vocabulary:

- I’ve taken a look at the other vocabularies suggested by Joe but IMO they are either of a different purpose or lower level of detail and therefore are not appropriate.

- I’ve identified some terms from the SOA Reference Model they may be appropriate. Peter – are there any other SOA terms you think should be included?

- I’ve searched for other common business vocabularies and decided that the one produced by ITIL is as good as any. ITIL is an internationally recognised source of best management practice and I would suggest we use their terms wherever possible.

- I’ve searched for other public sector vocabularies that are relevant and cannot find any other than the ones I had originally referenced.

- And finally I’ve mapped all the terms used in the other comparable vocabularies to the TGF terms so we can show how we link to those other sources.

The end result is shown in the attached spreadsheet and shows some suggested new TGF terms, some suggested revised definitions, and some questions to be answered. Will you please review this analysis and let me have your thoughts/comments on the outcome.

If we can agree a final list of terms then it should be relatively easy to produce a simple reference model from these as there are relatively few concepts, and bearing in mind we should aim to keep things simple and not require anyone to have a deep knowledge of modelling techniques to understand and interpret the model.

On the TC call Jenny asked what the audience for this work was. The TGF Primer sets out very clearly who the audience for the whole TGF is and I would suggest the audience for the vocabulary and model is most of this already listed but especially all stakeholders and public sector managers who are involved in the development, management and implementation of a TGF conformant program. Do we need to be more specific than that?

And one final thought. I think the resulting core vocabulary and reference model should replace the current section of the Primer and be referenced in the Core Pattern Language as non-mandatory but an example of good practice. I do not see the need to make it a separate Committee Note.
