Doing it in this way makes it compatible with generic Topic Map engines.

| Could anyone prove that I'm wrong in my supposition that XTM cannot

No, but I can prove you right. See the fourth bullet point at
  <URL: http://www.topicmaps.org/xtm/1.0/#conf-doc >

| Lets say that I want to add a couple more attributes from another
| namespace to instanceOf element. I can't see any way how it can be
| done at the moment.

You can do it easily, as Tony says, but no topic map implementation
will support it. Another question is why you would want to. If you
want to say something about the relationship between an instance and
its class topic maps offer you ways to do that *within* the TM
paradigm.

| Is there actually a namespace identifier for the current version of
| XTM?

It's http://www.topicmaps.org/xtm/1.0/.

A comment in the DTD says:

 <!-- Use this URI to identify the default XTM namespace:

           "http://www.topicMaps.org/xtm/1.0/"

       Used to identify the XLink namespace:

           "http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"
  -->

... but later the DTD actually uses a lower-case version of the URL:

  <!ATTLIST topicMap
     id              ID        #IMPLIED
     xmlns           CDATA     #FIXED 'http://www.topicmaps.org/xtm/1.0/'
     xmlns:xlink     CDATA     #FIXED 'http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink'
     xml:base        CDATA     #IMPLIED
  >

Cheers

To my knowledge a namespace identifier is either a URN or a URL. In
case of a URL the capitalization of the machine part is not relevant.

Minor modification:

"...no topic map implementation can directly support it natively".

If you are lucky, though, the implementation provides techniques like
a SAX parser for XTM. Here you can either subclass the parser and add
your semantics to it. Or, you can create a SAX pipeline in which you
handle your attributes before the SAX-XTM parser.

But I agree with Lars that you should trick to stick to the TM
paradigm as long as possible.

 True when used as a resource address, but namespace URIs are compared on a
character-by-character exact match basis __for namespace purposes__, and the
two do not produce the same results - one will work and the other will not
work (with an xslt processor, for example, or most other standard name-space
aware xml processors).

I think the all-lower case version is the one that is mostly in use out
there. Does anyone know if there are many (or any) exceptions?

Cheers,

Tom P

| Which one is the typo?

The all-lowercase version appears in the attribute declaration, as
Conal says; it also appears in section 4.3, and the PSIs all use the
lowercase version.

The new XTM syntax specification quietly corrects this by using the
lowercase version everywhere:
  <URL: http://www.y12.doe.gov/sgml/sc34/document/0328.htm >

Notice how in appendix B the exact same DTD appears, with the one
difference that the URI has been lowercased. :-)

following the XTM syntax cannot be doubted.

However, it should be noted that: XTM syntax != TM paradigm. (You can
check ISO 13250 if you are curious about other syntaxes for topic maps.)

| But I agree with Lars that you should trick to stick to the TM

* Patrick Durusau
|
| For ease in going from one XTM implementation to another, the value
| of following the XTM syntax cannot be doubted.
|
| However, it should be noted that: XTM syntax != TM paradigm. (You
| can check ISO 13250 if you are curious about other syntaxes for
| topic maps.)

You missed Robert's point, I'm afraid. He was saying that whatever you
wanted to attach an attribute to the <instanceOf> element to express
would be better expressed using topics, associations, and occurrences.

I tried my hand at creating an XML Schema for XTM too, and ended up with a
somewhat different structure. Just for fun I am including it below. I
believe it has got everything except the xml:base attribute, which I left
off for now because I did not get around to creating a separate little
schema for it, which you have to do because it is in another namespace.

In this version, I tried to avoid duplication. Most constructions that
appear more than once, I turned into model groups. Any element like
instanceOf which contains one of those groups but also has an id (and
possibly other attributes), I made a type for, and the type uses the model
group.

I used model groups partly because I like them, but also there is at least
one case where the same sequence of elements is used (in different places)
with and without a wrapper element. The use without the wrapper just uses
the model group (otherwise it would have to use an anonymous complex type),
for the other one I created a named complex type. This approach has, I
think, eliminated all duplication while keeping the schema simple and
reasonably understandable.

This design probably would not fall out of an automatic translation of an
RNG schema, and although I favor having a normative RNG schema, I have to
admit that more people will probably be served (at least for several years)
by an XML Schema version, whether normative or not.

I made the schema for xlink attributes define just the subset of xlink xtm
uses - href and type (fixed at "simple").

Here is the xlink schema first and then the main schema.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xs:schema targetNamespace="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"
xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"
attributeFormDefault="qualified">
 <xs:attribute name="href" type="xs:anyURI"/>
 <xs:attribute name="type" fixed="simple"/>
</xs:schema>

Hi,

For all of you who would like to use AsTMa= but do not have a
converter (available in the Perl distribution only) at hand, I have
resurrected the online converter:

   http://astma.it.bond.edu.au/cvt/index.mc

Aside from inline editing, it also allows automated conversion. To
convert, say, the latest Apache map (I know that some of you are
bundling it with your software), you can take the AsTMa= version

   http://demo:demo@topicmaps.it.bond.edu.au/mda/download-astma/apache/

off the server and chop it into the converter

   http://astma.it.bond.edu.au/cvt/index.mc?action=download&atmurl=http://demo:demo@topicmaps.it.bond.edu.au/mda/download-astma/apache/&auto_complete=on&format=on

[ URL may wrap, processing may take time ]

               Darmstadt, Germany
-----------------------------------------------------

First German Topic Maps Congress at April 10, 2003
in Darmstadt

The first German Topic Maps Congress will take place
at April 10, 2003 in Darmstadt. The "XML Topic Maps"
congress is organized by ZGDV (http://www.zgdv.de) -
well known for its successful series of XML congresses -
and sponsored by empolis (http://www.empolis.com).
Ten presenters (users, vendors, academics) will talk
about how Topic Maps work, available tools, how to
develop Topic Maps, how to visualize them, and how
to integrate them with the Semantic Web approach.
Real-world use cases will demonstrate various
applications of Topic Maps. The keynote, presented
by empolis CTO Stefan Wess, will provide the latest
trends and technologies for knowledge management and
explain the role Topic Maps play in the KM scenario. The
one-day congress will finish with a moderated panel
discussion giving the attendees the opportunity for a
lively Q&A session.

The congress language is German.

One of the most frequently asked questions that I have experienced re=
garding Topic Maps is something like this:
"What are people really doing with topic maps?"

And I often felt unequipped to provide a good answer to this question=
.

Can people on this list please help out?

I use topic maps and their visualization via SVG for the navigation
on my e-learning-server on http://www.LmTM.de (in german).

A description of one actual use (news feeds) is provided in Chapter 7 of the
WROX book, Professional XML Meta Data. You might also find leads to other
case history info in that chapter, and from some Google searches. One
likely source of actual use info would be the representatives of the member
commercial entities who are on the XTM standards body.

One of the most frequently asked questions that I have experienced regarding
Topic Maps is something like this:
"What are people really doing with topic maps?"

And I often felt unequipped to provide a good answer to this question.

Can people on this list please help out?

Thanks,

Please see any one of:
  <URL: http://www.forskning.no >
  <URL: http://www.hoyre.no >
  <URL: http://www.avhending.no >
  <URL: http://www.forbrukerportalen.no >

All of these run on topic maps right now, and more will follow before
very long. There's also a Norwegian governmental project to connect
governmental information in each district (kommune) and provide a
coherent interface to it (LivsIT) that's currently using TMs.

Another example is:
  <URL: http://www.idealliance.org/papers/xml2001papers/slides/Seidl/Elmer%20Preview%20-%20XML%202001%20Conference%20-%20Orlando.ppt >

There is more, but obviously a number of users keep a lid on what they
are doing with TMs. :-(
