Note that the important thing in merging is the *subject* not the syntactic
form used to reference the subject (via a topic or some external subject
indicator). So, if a topic A has a <subjectIdentity>:<topicRef> which refers
to topic B with a <subjectIdentity>:<subjectIndicatorRef> X and topic C has
a <subjectIdentity>:<subjectIndicatorRef> of X, then all three merge.
